of Shuar names
AMPUSH.-
BUHO: night bird.- In truth, the Shuar always considered it
an evil spirit, that is, a spirit of a dead ancestor. Its song
brings bad luck to those who hear it. They didn't used to eat
the meat of this animal because they thought that it was the incarnated
spirit of their ancestors.
ACHANIAT.-
Name of a small bird that lives in swampy areas. It feeds on insects.
It is characterized by its graceful movements and agility. Its
name tends to be given to boys that resemble it.
CHINKIUN.-
Generic name for birds. It is called out so that the new born
will grow in good health. No one has ever seen the bird die. When
it is found dead it is a sign of disaster.
CHINIMP.-
Name of the pigeon. One of the most resistant birds. It give courage.
The new born tends to be named Chinimp so that it is strong and
resistant for working long and hard.
CHUP.- Name of a bird, characterized for being tame and possible
to domesticate. It is given to a child so that he might be humble.
JEMPE
COLIBRI (hummingbird).- It represents the agility of man.
The myth of the jempe colibri teaches women to care for the fire,
which they must never allow to extinguish. In the past, to keep
the fires lit at night, they would throw on dry wood and always
keep the fire going. The name is given to a child so that he might
be agile; wise and robust and, above all, so that he might be
fast.
CHAKIKUI.-
Comes from the name of a bird, the vulture, "tukukui".
Before it was the son of Ayumpum, it became a bird of the same
name taken by curiosity. Ayumpum got angry with his wife, picked
up his children and immediately head towards the sky. During a
trance, accompanied by the attractive singing of the bird irshimp,
they transformed into birds. Its singing today is a signal of
the death of an elder.
